LABOR RELATIONS (UNIONS), WAGE AND HOUR LAWS

LABOR RELATIONS (UNIONS), WAGE AND HOUR LAWSEmployees are an asset to an organization who should be treated with care as they can turn to liabilities against the organization if they are not satisfied with application of operational rules. Through formation of labor unions and acts governing rights of employees, their grievances are effectively facilitated and attended to. In hospitality industry, the safety of employees is a crucial aspect to be overlooked in terms of safety, security and health concerns (Meneghello, 2010). The management has the responsibility of incorporating safety and security procedures and practices to their employees. A commendable practice in effective management is to conduct training especially on safety measures in work related emergencies such as fire, and injuries (Meneghello, 2010), which can be conducted within the premises with award of certificate after completion. Additionally, being liable to the employees will enhance attention to their issues especially the occasional and similar in occurrence, to instill confidence and enhance performance.Once management fail to acknowledge the safety and well being of their employees, they can fight for their rights in formation of labor unions and Acts mandated to fight against malpractices exercised by many organizations? management. According to (Green Lodging News, 2010), the Hyatt Regency housekeepers claims on safety and health concerns, have legal intervention from the unions created for hospitality workers; UNITE HERE and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The union will evaluate the case and act as an amplifier for the employees? grievances. On the other hand, OSHA determines its jurisdiction on the issue presented according to its regulation. Therefore, in Hyatt Regencies? cases the administration had no authority for such matters; hence the complaint forwarded by the union had viable recommendations. For employees in any institution to react to a problem, they must have been instigated by pressing factors. The problem presented has serious implications that clash with the performance of tasks and secondly, the problem at hand is causing harm to their productivity and their normal life. Based on that, the issue with housekeeping at Hyatt Regency has been facilitated by the safety provision contrariety with the labor expectations and practices affected (Green Lodging News, 2010); hence both correlate.Hospitality industry claims and strives to make the customer happy and satisfied to the level of disregarding the fact that, to achieve that goal, someone has participated with a lot of effort involved. Therefore, on this note the employees are overlooked against the customers? worth to the extent of their rights diminishing in wages and work against time. Most hotels (Safety Compliance Letter, 2006) with Hyatt Regency included, experience similar issues, with worst case scenarios of labor safety-deficits increasing in percentage as time advances with more rush for competitiveness. The difference among hotels is the approach and policies set forth in terms how to achieve their goals, in accordance to affirm or slight employees? considerations. According to (Brown, 2010), Hyatt Regency chains in varied locations have reported similar issues on housekeeping discontentment on safety, health and security principles as well as working allocations rights violated to a point of incurring long and short term injuries. In addition, the hotels are deemed to be driven by a turnover strategy hence compromise on other important issues that can affect reputation and the turnover. It is important for every hospitality organization with focus on Hyatt Regency group, to understand their goal and how they ought to realize it, genuinely. From that juncture, policies can be implemented with all aspects articulately assessed and where discrepancies are bound to be realized, mitigating alternatives should be holistically highlighted.Secondly, I would consider the cases presented against the statistics presented in the hospitality industry housekeeping as this is not a matter of discipline but a case of safety and well being consideration. This means that acting on the root of the problem with complete analysis of the subjects of propelling safety issues in terms of rooms? allocation against time, as well as the equipments and materials impact to health and safety of the room stewards.Based on the research by (Safety Compliance Letter, 2006), the projected figures show that the hotel housekeeping staff are subjected to work beyond their strength with women dominating the services of this department (Brown, 2010), hence more susceptible to implications on safety and health. Therefore, the change in rooms? amenities to heavier equipments is a subject of scrutiny in accordance to the workforce composition. In conclusion, hotel safety and health measures are curbed with major loop holes which are covered by the general outlook of the organization from an outsider?s perspective, but the there are more irregularities in operational safety and health concerns. A safe environment for working enhances productivity increase and general performance, with incorporation of communication on safety matters hence assurance of counteractive measures. The main issue of concern which raises question at the end of this study is, to what extent are the hotels ready to coordinate with their employees in housekeeping safety gaps and fostering conducive working environment?REFERENCESBrown, J.
