Paramedic Practice (Leadership & Mentorship) Section 1 Leadership Blaber (2012) suggests that leadership is relevant to the paramedic as they have to make leadership decisions on a daily basis, some of which are life and death. We have explored leadership theory, clinical leadership, decision making and human factors as part of the module and hopefully this has shaped your understanding of the context of leadership in the pre-hospital environment. Identify a time that you have had to act as a leader within the service; this could be in a clinical situation or a non-clinical context. Reflect (using a recognised model) on your role as a leader and the impact that you had upon the situation What kind of leader were you? Is this your natural leadership style? How do you know? How effective were you at being followed? Did you use the right style for the situation? Apply the theory from the module to your experience; where does the theory fit and what are the gaps in the theory? To close the cycle, what would you do differently and why? Make sure that you have chosen a situation upon which you can apply a number of theoretical models and that you pick a situation where you can show you have acted as a leader. Section 2 Mentorship Plan The module has also introduced you to some of the theory of mentorship and some practical tools for helping develop mentees. As part of the assessment strategy you should identify a student who is currently on the Certificate HE course that you can have some involvement with (it is important you speak with the students assigned mentor to agree your involvement). You should then develop a Mentorship Training Plan for the chosen student to cover a six week period of involvement. You should choose one specific skill/learning outcome from the Year One Practice Placement Portfolio (but not ECG lead application or the recognition of ECGs!) and show how, during the six week period, you take the student from being totally dependant through to being able to practice with minimal supervision (as is required of a Cert HE student at completion of the course) or as an independent practitioner. This Mentorship Plan should include the following: How you identified the specific learning outcome that required development What the students preferred learning style was What learning/teaching strategies did were used and why How you went about implementing the training plan and how it links to developing the student from dependant to independent What was the outcome for the student
