PERSUASIVE SPEECH ASSIGNMENT Objective The goal of this assignment is to further strengthen your speech preparation and delivery skills by developing and delivering a persuasive speech using the Monroes Motivated Sequence organizational pattern. Task Prepare a 5 7 minute speech to address a question of policy. Your speech should be designed to reinforce, modify, or change audience members beliefs, attitudes, opinions, values, or behaviors about the particular policy you choose to address. Details A. Your speech should use the five steps of Monroes Motivated Sequence: 1. Gain the audiences attention with a strong introduction that relates the topic to the listeners, links it to their lives and provides them with a strong reason to listen. 2. Establish the need for the policy you will promote by first explaining to listeners that this issue constituted as problem that requires their attention. 3. Satisfy the problem by explaining why the policy you are recommending will solve the problem. 4. Help audience members visualize an outcome by describing what will happen if audience members apply or dont apply the proposed solution. 5. Move the audience to action by detailing specific steps audience members can take to implement the solution. Support: Your speech must also include supporting information from a minimum of five reliable, valid, and credible reference sources. Citations must appear in the speech outline in three places: 1) Written into the sentence in which you will cite the source of your information for the audience, 2) In the body of the outline in the form of an in-text citation, and 3) in a correctly-formatted Works Cited page attached to your outline. All citations should be presented using APA citation style. Assignment Deliverables: Outline: You must use the Outline Builder App in MindTap to create and submit your complete-sentence outline for this speech. Submit the outline for your speech in MindTap no later than 8 a.m. on the due date. Please note: It is always wise to make a copy of your work in a Microsoft Office or other word processor document, as some outlines have not saved properly due to technical difficulties in the past! Delivery: Your speech should be presented using an extemporaneous delivery style. In other words, you should use prepared speaking notes to help you remember your key points. Do not attempt to memorize the speech; do not speak from your complete sentence outline (i.e. use the outline as a manuscript) as this will result in a very poor grade for delivery (since it will be difficult to use sufficient eye contact while also reading your outline). Presentation Aid: You must prepare an electronic presentation aid to enhance your audiences understanding of your speech topic. Your presentation aid may be prepared using PowerPoint or an online presentation support program (such as Prezi.) Presentation aids should be carefully prepared using the information on effective visual support, which can be found in chapter 11 of your text. Practice: You may earn up to 10 extra credit points if you elect to use the YouSeeU app in MindTap to record a practice speech. Whether you elect to use MindTap to record a practice speech or not, you should plan to talk through your speech several times before your delivery day to ensure that final deliver is as smooth and professional as possible!
