Social networking websites usually have a new user input a list of people with whom they share a connection and then allow the people on the list to confirm or deny the connection. Mostly teenagers are the ones using and surfing social networking sites. Most of them are students. Social network sites (SNSs) such as MySpace Facebook Youtube Skype etc have attracted millions of users many of whom have integrated these sites into their daily practices. Students consume a lot of time on this sites uploading or downloading getting information concerning their career or academic work. Students use social networking sites for their researches and studies but they often cannot log out to these sites. At present whether social networking sites are favorable or unfavorable many students use these sites on a daily basis. As social media continue to grow in popularity it is our belief that technology is a vital part of today?s student success. Many parent are now worried that their college students are now spending too much time on social networking sites. ABSTRACT Social network is a platform for people share their ideals to meet new friends and to reconnect with old friends. Social networking sites offer people new and varied ways to communicate via the internet whether through their PC or their mobile phone. Examples include MySpace Facebook Skype etc. They allow people to easily and simply create their own online page or profile and to construct and display an online network of contacts often called ?friends?. Users of these sites can communicate via their profile both with their ?friends? and with people outside their list of contacts. With Social networking sites (SNS) it is easy to communicate with your classmate discuss class assignment and even submit project to lecturer watch videos make comment on a friend page etc. The effect of SNS usage will depend on the type of SNS the student is using if student uses the internet for the purpose of leisure activity that interferes with academic it will affect the student academic performance negatively. This study focused on the effect of SNS on student academic performance using quantitative and qualitative method. Why students use social networking sites does it affect their studies or help them to learn easily. The study focused on the wider impacts and benefits of social networking sites in terms of communication with friends and family meeting new people personal expression and academic performance of the students and the implications on the use of SNS based on the results. The 20 questions personally designed and sent to about 50 students in the College of Education CLSU. Review of Related Studies and Literature This chapter presents the related literature and other related studies which bear significance to the present study. These are necessary in the analysis and interpretation of data found in this study. Different researchers have conducted research to ascertain the influence of social media on users; Moon (2011) in a study on Impact of Facebook on Undergraduate Academic Performance? claims that social media have negative impact on students. According to the result the more students use Facebook the more it affects their academic performance. Oye (2012) notes that the most of the younger students use SNS mainly for socializing activities rather than for academic purposes. On the contrary Oye (2012) observe that the most of the students do feel that social media have more positive impacts on their academic performance. In another study conducted by Shana (2012) it was revealed that students use SNS mainly for making friends and chatting. The results showed that only 26 percent of the students indicated that they use of social networking sites for academic purposes. Young (2006) in a study entitled The Effects of Internet Use and Social Capital on the Academic Performance on Students? observed that the internet expand its reach to teenager?s school life. Young noted that the students are more reliant on the internet to access information that is involved in school life as well as entertainment. The researcher further added that internet though consumes time and has less effect on studies. Yang (2003) notes the effect of social media depends large on the usage. Yoon (2000) observed that the type of social media or network subscribed to by a teenager exerts influence on him or her to visit the internet. Jeong (2005) noted that internet addiction is significant and negatively related to student?s academic performance as well as emotional. Background of the study The researchers were persuaded to conduct a study on the effects of social networking sites on the academic performance of students. The setting for this study was conducted at the College of Education Central Luzon State University. The reason for conducting this study is to investigate the various effects of social media on the academic performance of the students in CED. This study focused on the effect of SNS on student academic performance using quantitative and qualitative method. Why students use social networking sites does it affect their studies or help them to learn easily. The study focused on the wider impacts and benefits of social networking sites in terms of communication with friends and family meeting new people personal expression and academic performance of the students and the implications on the use of SNS based on the results. The various effects if any may eventually help out other students in the future. Based on this assertion the researchers were motivated to conduct a study on the different types of social media and their effects on the student?s studying habits. Objectives The social networking sites are gaining a lot of popularity these days with almost all of the educated youth using one or the other such site. It has become a potential means to a relation building and staying in touch with all known. Hence the objectives that the researchers wanted to achieve through the research are to: 1.To identify and understand the reasons why students use social networking sites. 2.To identify the wider impacts and benefits of social networking sites on the following entities; a.Communication with friends and family b.Meeting new people c.Personal expression d.Academic performance 3.To determine the implication o the use of SNS based on the results. Methodology The research was conducted using questionnaire which was distributed to about 50 CED students. Out of the 50 questionnaires that were sent all were answered and returned. 55% of the respondents are male while 45% are female. The respondents are from different years and sections? of the college. The researchers also conducted a interview to about 10 students from the college regarding the impacts and benefits of social networking sites in their academic performance. Data Collection Method The research was done through quantitative qualitative and secondary sources. The questionnaire was well-structured and the responses were sought from the respondents. The 20 questions also helped in quick analysis of the date collected. Population The main target of this research was mainly the students of any year and section of the College of Education CLSU.”
